The traditional medicine group was formed in 2021 by 19 women from the community of San Juan Mixtepec, Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca, with the goal of learning about traditional medicine and preserving the local knowledge of older women.

That same year, we connected with Fundación Pro-Mixteca. Through their promoter, Edmundo, we have received ongoing accompaniment, facilitation, and training in human development and technical topics to strengthen our project, providing quality products made with plants that we cultivate ourselves.

We meet at the community clinic to produce mainly cough syrups and ointments for cold-related discomfort, using fennel, muicle, dandelion, aloe vera, sage, pennyroyal, prodigiosa, and borage.

Today we are 10 women with a more consolidated structure that allows us to have local and regional sales. With Fundación Pro-Mixteca, we have the opportunity to go out and share our knowledge with elementary and secondary schools, as well as other sister communities interested in traditional medicine. These enriching dialogues promote the sharing of knowledge, such as our visit to Huajuapan de León, where—through the cultural Convite—we shared our community knowledge and our productive project.

For us, it is a pleasure to wear our traditional clothing, share the Mixtec language, and pass down ancestral knowledge in an intergenerational way. We invite you to learn about our project and our community.
